Hilltown History
|
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, most children in the Hilltowns attended one-room schoolhouses for grades 1-8. For many, their education ended there. Others were able to attend secondary school, sometimes boarding with families during the school year. In 1932 the Berne-Knox Central School was established in Berne. The school complex has been enlarged over the years, and Westerlo joined the district in 1973. Some of the old one-room school buildings are still standing. The restored Knox School #5 is in the National Register of Historic Places and has its own book, History of a One-Room Schoolhouse in Knox, NY.
